The Handmaids Tale Review

Yes, I am so so late to this saga but I finally read The Handmaids Tale and I really enjoyed it.

I have to be honest, it did take me a while to get into it and I did find it a bit slow going at first, but once I was hooked I was HOOKED. I do wonder whether that is maybe the point, to add to the sense of secrecy and unease.

I thought Atwood did such a good job of revealing enough that you carried on reading and didn’t get frustrated but also withholding just the right amount to be left in suspense. I thought it a very interesting concept that we never found out the central handmaids name and also thought it was incredibly interesting how much depth all of the characters had, with the reader sympathising with nearly all of them at various points.

The subject matter was certainly dystopian with select scenes being blatantly barbaric and revolting. The genre itself is not something I would typically go for but I think it is an acclaimed book for a reason and such a good read and I would definitely recommend.
