Summer- relaxing bliss or slow boredom?

I love summer, the sun, the sea, the slow lazy, hazy days- what’s not to love? Right?

Well, for many students summer signals a time to relax and take time out from studying hard all year by lazing around in the sun. Many people go on holiday at this time of year and typically people are happier, heading to the beach and getting outside.

Some people are great at spending time alone and keeping themselves amused but for others it’s not quite so easy. I personally try to use summer to reignite my passion for hobbies that have previously fallen by the wayside in the winter and autumn months as life and studying got in the way. Reminding yourself of your love for something is always nice and when friends or family are busy it can be really important to get good at spending time alone, which is certainly something I’m working on myself.

So! Here are my top tips and hobbies to keep you occupied alone over summer, whether you are going abroad on a lovely holiday or keeping it local and staying at home.

  • Get scrapbooking! I recently took up junk journalling and it is really fun to collect little bits of memorabilia of your day and stick them together.
  • READ- this is my all time favourite hobby and can be done inside or outside catching some sun. If you ask me it is the ultimate cool girl hobby.
  • Get outside and go on a walk/run/cycle. Not only is it really nice to get outdoors and get moving but it’s good for your body and good for your mind.
  • Wild water swim- I have always loved to swim, especially in the sea, but that is not possible for everyone. Any large source of water will do, find a stream, river, creek etc and go wild! obviously check it’s safe first!
  • Take up some form of craft. I can often be found sewing, drawing, knitting or painting and i think it’s a really fun, screen free way to spend time. So why not take up a new hobby and learn a cool skill?
  • Bake something summery! There are so many great yummy summer bakes and loads of them are traditionally English. Trifle, Eton mess, viccy sponge? Absolutely 👏 Yes 👏 please 👏.
  • Listen to a new podcast. Podcasts are great to listen to alone because it can feel like you’re having a conversation. They’re perfect to pop on in the background whilst you’re trying to get stuff done or just when you’re sunbathing.

So, relive some of the summer boredom and spend time alone in the sun.
